There’s a kit for that.

V6s apparently suit the Miata well. Lighter (at least those with aluminum blocks), smaller so its center-of-mass is further back, and it provides enough rev-happy power without overkill amounts of torque.

Hell, Mazda made two V6 prototypes!

M2-1006 “CobraSter”

By far the wildest Tachibana creation was the M2-1006 “CobraSter”, as it was referred to by Mazda’s insiders. This was the Mazda version of the infamous Shelby Cobra of the Sixties, fitted with the Mazda 929’s Quad-Camshaft, 24-Valve V6 under the hood. The rear subframe was ditched and instead M2 Engineers used the rear subframe and suspension from the Mazda RX-7 for added strength. The front tires were 225/50-16’s, and the tucked under the bulging rear fenders they used 245/45-16’s tires.

And later a Duratec V6 NB.

The car was completed only a couple of weeks before R&T showed up and the engineers did not have time to sort out the suspension to bring it back to normal handling. The modified car, with 3.0L Ford Duratec aluminum engine, weighs only 148lbs more than stock. The balance was only shifted 1%, from 51/49 to 52/48. The weight measurements were taken by 4 corner weighting with driver and 3/4 tank of gas, before and after. The hood is a good chunk of that weight - it felt like something I would use as a door to a bomb shelter. The car is an engineering demonstration, not a styling exercise.

I approve of all engine swaps that aren’t GenIII related.

I’m a fan of the KLZE swapped Miatas you see from time to time. They sound sublime.

Honda V6 J-swap needs more time to mature. Because J engine is developed for FWD, the mounting points don’t match. I was pretty excited until I looked more into it. Since the adapter plate is the only thing keeping your engine in place, you can imagine the amount of vibration it experiences by dangling there. The starter also ends up locating on the bottom of the adapter plate, which means a bad bump on the road can rip it right out along with your only engine support.

tldr: Honda JV6 good for cruising miatas, not yet ready for track/stanced miatas.
